ELEMENTAL DASH Interactive Dark Ride Prototype Concept

Elemental Dash: Quest for the Blue Moon is a prototype concept for a dark ride + queue that combines mobile interaction to push storytelling, circulation, and repeated visits in a theme park. This project was developed from 3 months of collaboration between myself, Kyle Branch, Brooke Pandos, Mark Evan Lim, and Susey Chang along with the guidance and mentorship of Patrick Kling.

The project culminated in a presentation of our work on TETV’s “So… You’re About to Graduate College” livestream show.

ABSTRACT: EMBRACING THE MOBILE DEVICE

Our design process began when we started asking the question: what does a theme park attraction in 2020 look like? We wanted to address common issues that parks around the world are facing by embracing new user behaviors and design techniques. In short, the center of our Venn diagram was: the mobile phone, as our modern guests using their devices as a mean of scheduling, way-finding, in-queue entertainment, food ordering, etc. The problem, however, is that most of the phone integrations we’ve seen in parks tend to feel shoehorned.

We wanted to design an experience where the phone is part of and enhances the show, where it doesn’t distract from the story, but rather become an enhancement lens, and a tool to keep guests entertained before and after their experience, even motivating them to unlock new discoveries upon returns and allow parks to manage traffic during day-to-day operations.

THE ATTRACTION STARTS BEFORE YOU VISIT THE PARK

Create a profile and adopt the four elemental animals. Engage with the story and fun before you visit the park by playing games to feed, bathe, and groom your virtual friends.

Get them ready for the upcoming race by grinding hard in training games to build up your high score and skill points for later results in the ride.

DON’T WAIT, ROAM AND PLAY

Instead of switchbacks, or even highly themed immersive linear queue experiences, we have designed a queue environment that gives guests agency in choosing how they want to spend their time waiting to go on the ride. The idea here is to create a queue that is just as integral to the story and just as enjoyable a space to spend time in as the ride itself.

Once they pass the pre-show, guests find themselves entering a central space that offers a stunning view of the heart of the tree. In the center stands a majestic Olympic-style torch that integrates all four elements. Around the perimeter, villagers and merchants have set up carts and kiosks to sell their wares, most of which revolve around the elemental spirits and the exciting race that is taking place today.

Beyond this center space are meandering caverns concealing a bar, quick service restaurant, interactive zones, and 4 elemental lounges, one for each element. Some of these spaces are secretive, like a hidden speakeasy, and are just waiting to be discovered!

A preshow explains the story and logistics of the experience.

When guests enter the queue, the app automatically switches to dark mode to blend in with indoor lighting.

PLAY IN-QUEUE GAME TO LEVEL UP YOUR ELEMENTAL PETS

The phone becomes a controller for the user to interact with the games in the space. The UI is designed to be simple and non-distracting so the guests can ‘look up’ at the environment and each other to bond.

OR BUY FOOD, BEVERAGES, AND MERCHANDISE TO UNLOCK SOME EXCLUSIVE POWER UPS

From a business perspective, this queue model, combined with the gamification on the app, provides spaces to upsell merchandise, food & beverages as these items, when purchased, can give guests special boosters and abilities in their profile and/or the ride.

AN EPIC CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN ADVENTURE IN 3 ACTS

Storyboard by Mark E. Lim

Our epic adventure, like any other theatrical narrative, is written in three acts. The ride experience is unique to each guest, as their specific customized pet is integrated into the environments through projection and holographic technology integrated into the showsets.

ACT 1: The Raging River. See how you pets navigate and pave the way for your vessel on an excitingly treacherous current.

The otters part water, the snakes light the way, and the foxes move rocks to tame the current, while the owls stir up a breeze to blow us back on track.

ACT 2: The Glowing Cavern. Vehicles that performed well in Act 1 will get treated to a gorgeous float through a glowing cave. Vehicles with lesser skilled pets will get knocked off track into a rougher rapid.

ACT 3: Finale. Guests speed out of the cave and discover they’ve been inside the base of an erupting volcano! With the volcanic eruption causing chaos all around them, the spirits use their powers to combat the dangers, shield the guests, and propel the vehicles forward. It’s neck and neck, but ultimately, one vehicle ekes out a victory.

As guests disembark, they receive a notification on the app of a reward for their hard work, along with an invitation for them to keep training their pet before they return the next time.

A NON-LINEAR, BOUNDLESS STORY FOR GUESTS + A TOOL FOR PARKS TO BOOST CIRCULATION AND UPSELL OPPORTUNITIES

As we developed this attraction, we thought about how it could manifest in a variety of ways. Although the Elemental Dash: Quest for the Blue Moon attraction is designed with a world-class theme park in mind, we also believe this type of experience is highly scalable. It could feasibly be implemented into a smaller, regional park, or even outside of a theme park and instead at a resort, cruise ship, family entertainment center, national park, or standalone attraction destination.

One specific aspect that we see great potential in is the opportunity for Customer Relationship Management through this type of experience. As the experience is app-driven, parks/resorts/etc. would be able to track guest patterns and use that information in a variety of ways.

For example, a theme park could use guest traffic flow patterns based off of data collected from the app to determine when to send out a push notification to a guest’s phone throughout the day to drive them to certain parts of the park in order to improve overall circulation and minimize congestion.

Thank you!
